Key Stage 2: Icebreakers

Icebreakers: Key Stages 1/2 Community Relations.

This can be delivered as outreach at either school or at the Centre.  The session lasts for 90 minutes and uses a combination of paired and small group activities.

Maximum group size is 2 classes.   It is advised that pupils wear name badges and if possible eat break and play together.

  1. Pupil Detective: Pupils work together to try to discover key ‘facts’ about their partner.  Offers the opportunity to discuss similarities and differences.  Helps to develop communication skills.

  1. Pupil Bingo:  In groups pupils work together to complete a bingo grid.  The activity encourages mixing and working together in a fun environment.

  1. Games: Busy Bee.  Pupils in pairs try to come up with the most creative or imaginative idea.

  1. St. Patrick Brainstorm: A small group activity to discover what pupils already know about St. Patrick.  Pupils share ideas and this is an opportunity for learning from each other.

  1. St. Patrick Card Sort: This builds on the previous activity and again pupils work in small groups.  Pupils have to match a sentence to the correct picture and then sequence the story of St. Patrick.  This will involve negotiating and thinking skills.

  1. Negotiating a Charter: In their group pupils individually decide upon a rule for working/playing with new people.  This ideas are pooled the group selects their favourite suggestion.  All pupils participate and the decision requires discussion and compromise.  A Charter is agreed with a suggestion from each group.  All pupils sign the Charter and this can be used to structure subsequent interactions.

  1. Evaluation: Pupil and Teacher to assist with the delivery of future workshops.

  1. Teachers are provided with questions to be used for Reflective Journals to de-brief the session and provide a link to following sessions.
