Key Stage III
Key Stage 3 at The Saint Patrick Centre:
Introduction to St. Patrick Workshop.
The day will start with an over-view of the planned activities.
The activities will involve the pupils being broken down into mixed groups with a maximum of 20 in each group. Each group will have a guide for each activity. Activities are scheduled to last for 45 minutes. A visit lasts for 3 hours, including 15 minutes for break and 30 minutes for lunch.
1. Scriptorium workshop:
This involves an introduction to early Celtic monastic life. The workshop considers the role of monasteries in the development of Christianity and also their importance/role in the recording of history and the lives of Saints. The concept of Hagiography is introduced, namely the Book of Armagh which details the Life of Patrick. Particular focus is given to the Scriptorium in the monastery and pupils are shown the tools which would have been used and then given the opportunity to try writing with a quill and copying illuminations taken from the Book of Kells. The pupils design a bookmark which they take home.
2. Exhibition Trail:
This is a guided trail through the interactive exhibition, which explores the story and spiritual journey of Patrick using the words of the Confession. Pupils will work in pairs to complete questions that encourage engagement with the information. Questions will make links to themes of RE, History and Citizenship. This activity seeks to encourage skills of working with others, and independent thought, while promoting cultural and spiritual awareness.
3a. The Auditorium:
A virtual trip around Ireland showing the sites contacted to the Saint and early Christianity. A commentary explores the differing opinions that exist about the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Pupils are given the opportunity to reflect upon the differing viewpoints surrounding the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and how the event can be celebrated in an inclusive way. This links into Local and Global Citizenship: Diversity and Inclusion.
3b. Trip to the grave.
This is an opportunity to see the burial place of Patrick next to Down Cathedral. The guide will highlight the legend surrounding Patrick’s death and burial. Reference will be made to John de Courcy’s claims and connection with St. Patrick.
Evaluation:
There will be a pupil and teacher evaluation to aid future workshop provision.
Follow-up:
Teachers will be provided with suggested reflective questions to de-brief the day’s experiences back in the classroom. Additional follow up activities can also be requested.
